316 stainless steel adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 304 alloy, which significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments — saltwater, de-icing salts, swimming pool chemicals, and industrial atmospheres. For most indoor, dry applications, 304 is sufficient. For outdoor, coastal, or chemically exposed installations, 316 is the recommended grade and is worth the modest price premium.
