Match the cross-section dimension to your project's slot, channel, or structural requirement. Round rods are measured by outer diameter — for example, a 3mm rod is approximately 1/8" in diameter, and a 5mm rod is approximately 3/16". Square rods are measured by side length. U/L/H-profiles are measured by their outer width. When in doubt, size up slightly — ABS can be sanded or trimmed to fit without cracking.

Solid rods (Round, Square) provide maximum rigidity and are typically used for structural framing, axles, or column details. Hollow tubes (Round Hollow, Square Hollow) are lighter, allow wiring or thin rods to pass through, and are generally used for piping simulation, conduit details, or weight-sensitive builds. For most decorative applications, hollow profiles work just as well as solid ones at a lower material weight.

ABS plastic generally has moderate UV resistance. For short-term outdoor display or temporary use, it typically performs adequately. For prolonged outdoor exposure, we recommend painting or sealing the surface with a UV-resistant clear coat, as uncoated ABS may yellow or become brittle over time in direct sunlight. For permanent outdoor structural applications, consider UV-stabilized materials instead.

ABS bonds well with styrene-compatible solvent cement (which creates a chemical weld for the strongest joint), cyanoacrylate (super glue) for fast tacking, and plastic-rated two-part epoxy for gap-filling joints. Avoid standard wood glues or non-plastic-rated adhesives, as adhesion will generally be poor. For permanent structural joints in models, solvent cement is typically the preferred choice.

Yes. ABS accepts most acrylic, enamel, and lacquer paints. For best results, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (400–600 grit) and apply a plastic-compatible primer before painting. This improves paint adhesion and gives a smoother, more professional finish. Rattle-can primers labeled for plastic work well for most hobby applications.
