A kill switch lanyard (also called an engine cut-off switch tether or ECOS cord) connects the operator’s wrist or life jacket to the outboard motor’s emergency stop switch. If the operator falls overboard or is thrown from the helm, the lanyard pulls the kill switch clip free, immediately cutting the engine. In the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard requires recreational vessels under 26 feet with engines of 115 hp or more to use an engine cut-off switch when the vessel is underway and on plane (33 CFR Part 175).

Generally yes for PWC brands that share kill switch socket designs with the listed outboard brands. Yamaha PWC models typically use the same kill switch clip as Yamaha outboards. For Bombardier (Sea-Doo) and other PWC brands, select the matching brand variant. The coiled spring cord is designed to extend sufficiently to allow normal operator movement at the helm while remaining taut enough to pull the kill switch if the operator is displaced. Extended length is generally in the range of 600–1200mm (24–47") depending on the variant. The operator end of the lanyard has a loop or clip that attaches to your wrist, belt loop, or life jacket D-ring. Wrap the loop around your wrist and secure it, or clip it to a D-ring on your PFD. The other end clips into the kill switch socket on your outboard motor’s control panel. Always test the connection before getting underway by gently pulling the lanyard to confirm the clip releases the kill switch cleanly.
