Match the fitting diameter to your existing pipe's nominal outside diameter. For most residential drip-irrigation main lines, 20 mm (¾ in) or 25 mm (1 in) is sufficient. Larger 32–50 mm sizes suit higher-flow commercial runs or structural framing applications. If you are unsure, measure the outside diameter of your pipe and select the closest matching size.

These fittings are designed for low-to-moderate pressure applications such as garden irrigation, drip systems, and conduit runs. They are not rated for mains-pressure hot-water supply lines. For pressurised cold-water irrigation, ensure you use the correct PVC primer and cement to achieve a fully fused joint, and stay within the pressure limits of Schedule 40 PVC for the chosen diameter.

PVC is inherently corrosion-resistant and does not rust, rot, or react with most fertiliser solutions used in irrigation. The blue pigment includes UV stabilisers to slow surface degradation from sunlight. For long-term outdoor exposure, consider painting or wrapping exposed fittings to extend service life further.

The number refers to how many pipe sockets the fitting has. A 3-way elbow creates a T- or L-shaped junction with one additional branch. A 4-way adds a fourth port, useful for cross-junctions. A 5-way fitting allows branching in five directions from a single node — common in hydroponic frames. A 6-way fitting creates a full six-directional hub, ideal for 3D structural frames or complex manifold layouts.

These fittings use solvent-weld (slip) sockets and are not compatible with push-fit or threaded connections without an adapter. To connect to threaded pipe, use a separate threaded-to-slip adapter fitting with the appropriate thread standard (BSP or NPT) before joining to these elbows.

Clean and dry both the pipe end and the socket interior. Apply PVC primer to both surfaces and allow it to flash off (typically 15–30 seconds). Apply PVC cement to both surfaces, push the pipe firmly into the socket with a slight twist, and hold for 30 seconds. Allow the joint to cure for at least 1 hour before applying any pressure, and 24 hours before full-pressure testing.

Count the number of junction nodes in your planned layout and add 10–15% for cutting errors or future extensions. For a small raised-bed irrigation grid with 4 branch points, a 5-piece pack typically covers the build with spares. For larger greenhouse frames or multi-row irrigation runs, the 10-piece pack offers the best per-unit value and ensures you have replacements on hand.
