Match the fitting's inner diameter to the outer diameter of your PVC pipe. Standard metric PVC pipe is sized by outer diameter, so a 20 mm fitting accepts pipe with a 20 mm outer diameter. If you are unsure, measure the outside of your existing pipe and select the matching size. Common residential cold-water supply lines use 20–25 mm; larger distribution mains typically use 32–50 mm.

Rigid PVC solvent-weld fittings are widely used in pressurised water supply systems. Once the solvent cement has fully cured (typically 24 hours before pressure testing), the joint strength exceeds the pipe wall strength itself. Cut the pipe square, deburr the end, and dry-fit to confirm alignment. Apply PVC primer to both the pipe end and the socket interior, then apply solvent cement evenly to both surfaces. Push the pipe firmly into the socket with a slight twist, hold for 30 seconds, and wipe away excess cement. Allow the joint to cure undisturbed for at least 1 hour before handling and 24 hours before pressure testing.

PVC is inherently corrosion-resistant and does not rust, scale, or pit like metal fittings. It is compatible with most common water treatment chemicals, fertiliser solutions (for irrigation), and mild acids or alkalis. It is not suitable for concentrated solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, or high-temperature fluids above approximately 60 °C (140 °F). These are solvent-weld socket fittings only. They are not compatible with push-fit (compression) or threaded (BSP/NPT) connections without a transition adapter. If you need to connect to a threaded system, use a solvent-weld-to-threaded adapter at the transition point. Ensure any adapter is rated for your operating pressure.

The three colours are functionally identical — the difference is purely aesthetic and practical for identification. White is the most common choice for general plumbing and blends with standard white pipework. Blue is often used to colour-code cold-water or irrigation circuits. Grey is popular in industrial or concealed installations where a neutral tone is preferred. All three colours are made from the same rigid PVC material.

Count the number of 5-way junction points your layout requires, then add 10–15% extra for cutting errors or future repairs. For a single repair or prototype, the 1-piece option is ideal. For small manifold systems (2–4 branches), the 2-piece pack offers a cost saving. Larger irrigation or distribution projects benefit from the 5- or 10-piece packs, which offer the best per-unit value.
