PVC Coated Steel Wire Rope — Flexible Rigging Cable for Outdoor, Marine & DIY Use

When a bare metal cable isn't enough — whether you're rigging a garden trellis, tensioning a balustrade, securing a load, or running a clothesline — exposed wire corrodes, snags, and marks surfaces. This PVC coated steel wire rope gives you the tensile strength of a multi-strand steel core with a smooth, weather-resistant plastic jacket that protects both the cable and whatever it contacts.

This PVC coated steel wire rope is available in two strand constructions: 7×7 (flexible, suited to 0.6mm–5mm diameters) and 7×19 (more flexible, suited to 6mm–12mm diameters). Diameters range from 0.6mm (approx. 1/42") to 12mm (approx. 15/32"), and lengths are sold per metre from 1M up to 20M. The outer PVC jacket is available in Clear or Black to suit visible or concealed installations.

Typical applications include wire rope balustrade infill, garden trellis tensioning, marine deck rigging, cable railing systems, clothesline runs, and light-duty lifting or lashing where a coated cable is required. The smooth jacket makes it well suited to any application where bare wire would abrade a surface or corrode in wet conditions.

⚠️ Diameter and construction affect load capacity. Always verify the working load limit for your specific application before use. This cable is not rated for overhead lifting unless explicitly confirmed.

✅ Key Features of These PVC Coated Steel Wire Ropes

  • Multi-strand steel core — 7×7 construction for diameters 0.6mm–5mm; 7×19 construction for 6mm–12mm, providing increased flexibility at larger diameters.
  • PVC outer jacket — Smooth plastic coating resists moisture, UV exposure, and surface abrasion; available in Clear (low-visibility) or Black (contrast finish).
  • Wide diameter range — 0.6mm through 12mm (approx. 1/42" to 15/32") covers light-duty craft and garden work through to structural cable railing and rigging.
  • Cut-to-length options — Available in 1M, 2M, 4M, 5M, 10M, and 20M lengths so you only buy what you need for the job.
  • Corrosion-resistant construction — The PVC jacket seals the steel strands from direct moisture contact, extending service life in outdoor, coastal, and damp environments.
  • Flexible handling — The multi-strand lay allows the rope to bend around pulleys, ferrules, and swage fittings without kinking under normal working conditions.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 7×7 and 7×19 construction?

7×7 means the rope has 7 strands, each made of 7 individual wires (49 wires total). 7×19 has 7 strands of 19 wires each (133 wires total). More wires per strand means greater flexibility. The 7×19 construction is used on the larger diameters (6mm–12mm) in this range because those sizes benefit from the added flexibility when bending around fittings or pulleys.

How do I choose the right diameter for my project?

Diameter selection depends on the load you need to carry and the fittings you plan to use. For decorative trellis or garden wire, 0.6mm–1.5mm is typically sufficient. For cable railing balustrades, 3mm–4mm is common. For heavier rigging or structural tensioning, 5mm–8mm is more appropriate. Always check the working load limit for the specific diameter and confirm your swage fittings, ferrules, or turnbuckles are rated to match.

Is this wire rope suitable for outdoor and marine use?

The PVC jacket provides a barrier against moisture and helps slow corrosion of the steel core. It performs well in outdoor garden, patio, and general coastal environments. For fully submerged or continuous saltwater immersion applications, we recommend confirming the core wire specification before use, as the jacket alone does not make the cable fully marine-grade stainless.

Can I cut this rope to a custom length?

The rope is sold in the fixed lengths listed (1M, 2M, 4M, 5M, 10M, 20M). You can cut it to a shorter length using wire rope cutters or bolt cutters — a clean cut prevents fraying. To seal the cut end of the PVC jacket, apply a small amount of heat-shrink tubing or end cap ferrule. We do not currently offer arbitrary custom-cut lengths.

What fittings are compatible with this wire rope?

This rope is compatible with standard wire rope fittings sized to match the cable diameter: swage ferrules (oval or round), wire rope clips (bulldog grips), thimbles, turnbuckles, and eye bolts. Always match the fitting bore to the cable's nominal diameter. For 7×19 rope at 6mm and above, use fittings rated for flexible wire rope rather than rigid rod.

Does the PVC coating affect the overall diameter I should order?

Yes. The diameter listed (e.g. 3mm) refers to the overall outside diameter including the PVC jacket. The steel core diameter will be slightly smaller — typically 0.3mm–0.8mm less depending on the size. If you are sizing fittings, use the listed overall diameter. If you need to know the bare steel core diameter for load calculations, contact us to confirm for your specific variant.

What is the difference between Clear and Black PVC coating?

Both colours use the same PVC jacket material and provide equivalent corrosion protection. Clear coating allows the steel strands to show through, giving a more industrial or low-profile look. Black coating provides a defined contrast finish that suits dark metalwork, powder-coated frames, or applications where the cable is meant to be a visible design element. Note that not all diameters are available in both colours — check the variant selector for availability.
