Match the ID to the outer diameter of the fitting or barb it will slip over. For a snug, leak-resistant fit, the tube ID should be equal to or very slightly smaller than the barb OD. For example, a 6mm barb typically pairs well with a 6mm ID tube. If you are routing fluid through the tube bore itself, size the ID to your target flow rate. To convert: 1 inch ≈ 25.4mm, so a 1/4" barb is approximately 6.35mm OD.

Wall thickness equals (OD − ID) ÷ 2. For example, the 4mm ID × 8mm OD variant has a 2mm wall, while the 6mm ID × 10mm OD variant also has a 2mm wall. The 15mm ID × 20mm OD size carries a 2.5mm wall. You can calculate the wall for any listed variant using the same formula. Thicker walls generally provide better kink resistance and higher pressure tolerance.

Silicone generally withstands continuous temperatures from approximately −60 °C (−76 °F) up to 200 °C (392 °F), making it suitable for hot water, wort, and low-pressure steam lines in most DIY and light-industrial settings. It will not soften or deform the way PVC does when exposed to boiling water. For sustained high-pressure steam applications, consult a qualified engineer before use.

For a secure connection, a stainless steel hose clamp over the barb is recommended for pressurized lines.

Silicone is more kink-resistant than PVC at equivalent wall thicknesses, but very tight bend radii can still restrict flow. As a general guideline, keep the bend radius at least 3–4× the tube OD to maintain full bore opening. Larger-diameter tubes with thicker walls are more resistant to kinking. If your routing requires very tight bends, consider using an elbow fitting instead.
