At 4mm thickness, these sheets are suited to structural uses where a thinner gauge would flex or deform. Grade 304 stainless steel resists oxidation and general atmospheric corrosion well in most outdoor environments. However, it is not ideal for prolonged exposure to salt spray, coastal air, or chloride-rich conditions — Grade 316 is recommended for those environments. For sheltered outdoor use, covered patios, or general workshop applications, 304 performs reliably.

Yes. Grade 304 stainless steel is readily weldable using TIG or MIG processes with ER308L filler wire. Use a back-purge of argon on thicker sections to prevent oxidation on the reverse side. Post-weld, passivate or pickle the weld zone to restore corrosion resistance if the surface finish is critical.

For cutting, use an angle grinder fitted with a stainless-rated cutting disc, a cold saw, or a jigsaw with a bi-metal blade. For drilling, HSS-Co (cobalt) drill bits with a cutting fluid or paste are recommended — standard HSS bits will work but wear faster. Avoid using tools previously used on mild steel without cleaning, as embedded iron particles can cause surface rust spots.

Grade 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, offering solid corrosion resistance for most general-purpose and indoor applications. Grade 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum, which significantly improves resistance to chlorides and salt water. For kitchen fabrication, indoor brackets, and general DIY, 304 is the practical and cost-effective choice. For marine, coastal, or chemical environments, 316 is the better option.
