Three Steps to Modify a Socket for Fast Screw Hook Installation
Step 1: Cut a slot in the socket
Secure the hex socket in a bench vise. Use an angle grinder with a thin cut‑off wheel to cut two symmetrical wide slots across the side wall. This turns the end of the socket into a two‑jaw (or two‑prong) clip. Wear safety glasses – this step produces bright sparks.
Step 2: Engage the hook
Mount the modified socket onto your drill. Align the socket's opening with the curved eye of the screw hook and push it in until they lock together firmly.
Step 3: Drive it in with the drill
Start the drill. Keep it perpendicular to the pilot hole and apply gentle forward pressure. The socket spins the hook, driving it into the wood in seconds. Repeat for as many hooks as needed.
Cutting two symmetrical slots into a socket turns it into a two‑jaw clip that grabs the curved eye of a screw hook. What used to be a tedious manual task becomes a few seconds of drill time. Remember: always drill pilot holes first, use low speed on the drill, and control your pressure to avoid splitting the wood. Now it's your turn – grab an old socket, fire up the angle grinder, and never hand‑twist a screw hook again!
