Materials List
- Needle-nose pliers (with a built-in cutting edge)
- Electrical wire
Instructions
Position the Wire
Place the wire against the cutting edge of your pliers at the point where you want the insulation to end.
Rotate and Score
Gently rotate the wire against the blade. Apply just enough pressure to cut through the plastic insulation but not the metal core.
Find the "Feel"
This step is crucial. You want to feel the blade bite into the plastic without nicking the copper strands underneath.
Pull
Once the insulation is scored all the way around, grip the wire firmly and pull the pliers toward the end. The insulation should slide right off.
Stripping wire with pliers is a useful backup skill when a dedicated wire stripper isn’t available. It takes some practice to develop the right touch, but once you do, it can be a handy technique for quick repairs and emergencies.
- Always make sure the wire is disconnected from power before working on it.
- For repeated electrical work, use a dedicated wire stripper for cleaner, more consistent results.
