Materials List

  • Tape Measure (Flat-sided works best)
  • PVC Tubing (A small 1-inch scrap)
  • Short Wood Screw
  • Pencil

Quick Setup

Step 1: Prepare the Pipe Mounting

Cut a small section of PVC pipe. Drill a pilot hole through one side of the pipe. This hole will be used to attach the sleeve to the tape measure.

Step 2: Mount the Holder

Remove the screw from the tape measure's belt clip. Align the pilot hole in the PVC pipe with the mounting hole on the tape measure. Drive the screw back through the pipe to secure it firmly to the casing.

Step 3: Secure the Pencil

Drill a second, smaller hole on the side of the PVC pipe. Insert your pencil into the pipe, then drive a short screw into this second hole. This acts as a tensioner (or set screw) to lock the pencil at your desired height.

Marking the Workpiece

Extend the tape to your required measurement and engage the thumb lock. Place the tape hook against the edge of the board and drag the assembly across. The pencil will follow, creating a perfectly straight, parallel line.
