Match the thread to your existing tapped hole or mating nut. M3 (3 mm diameter) is common on small camera accessories, electronics enclosures, and lightweight brackets. M4 (4 mm) is widely used in PC chassis, 3D printer frames, and medium-duty fixtures. M5 (5 mm) suits heavier structural connections such as rail systems, larger camera cages, and load-bearing brackets. If you are unsure, measure the inner diameter of your tapped hole or check your equipment's documentation.

The screw variant has a standard through-threaded shaft — it passes through a clearance hole and threads into a nut or tapped hole on the other side. The blind-hole nut variant has an internally threaded cavity that does not pass all the way through the knob, giving a cleaner appearance on the exposed face and preventing debris from entering from the back. Use the nut variant when you want a captive threaded insert that a screw threads into from one side only.

The stainless steel shaft provides the primary tensile and shear strength of the fastener, while the aluminum knob handles the torque transfer during hand-tightening. For hand-tightened applications — camera accessories, panel fasteners, adjustable brackets — this combination is more than adequate. These fasteners are not intended for high-torque structural joints where a wrench-tightened steel bolt would be specified. Do not exceed hand-tight torque to avoid stripping the aluminum knob interface.

The black anodized finish on the aluminum knob is an electrochemical surface treatment that is integral to the metal, not a paint or coating that sits on top. It resists chipping and peeling under normal handling. With very frequent use, the knurl peaks may show minor wear over time, which is cosmetic and does not affect function. The stainless steel shaft is inherently corrosion-resistant and does not require a surface coating.

The knob diameter affects how much torque you can apply by hand and how much clearance you need around the fastener. A 16 mm (D16) knob gives a larger grip surface, making it easier to tighten firmly in applications where you need a more secure connection or where gloves may be worn. A 12 mm (D12) knob is more compact and suits tight spaces where adjacent components limit access. Check the clearance around your mounting point before selecting.

The stainless steel shaft offers good corrosion resistance in mildly humid or outdoor conditions. The black anodized aluminum knob also has reasonable weather resistance. However, these fasteners are not rated for continuous immersion or highly corrosive environments (salt spray, chemical exposure). For outdoor use, periodic inspection is recommended. If the application involves prolonged moisture exposure, consider applying a thin layer of anti-seize compound to the threads to prevent galvanic corrosion between the stainless steel and aluminum components.

For a single camera cage or PC panel build, 5–10 pieces of a given size is usually sufficient. If you are building multiple units or want to keep spares on hand, the 50-piece pack offers a lower per-unit cost.
