Match the thread diameter to your existing tapped hole or nut. M8 has an 8mm nominal thread diameter; M10 is 10mm. If you're tapping a new hole, M10 provides more clamping strength for heavier panels or higher-vibration environments. M8 is sufficient for most light enclosure and jig applications.
Measure the total thickness of the material being fastened plus any nut or insert depth. The thread length should be at least equal to the material thickness — ideally 1.5× the thread diameter longer for full engagement. For example, an M8 screw needs at least 12mm of thread engagement for reliable hold.
