The extension shank adds extra length between the wall mount and the faucet body. This is useful if your water supply pipes are recessed deeper than standard, or if you want the faucet to project further forward to better reach back burners. It also accommodates thicker wall finishes (e.g., tile over backer board). If you don't need the extra length, the shank can be removed โ the faucet works with or without it.
