S301 (AISI 301) is an austenitic stainless steel with slightly lower nickel content than 304, which allows it to work-harden more rapidly during cold rolling. S301 stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance in mildly humid, indoor-outdoor, and typical workshop environments. For prolonged exposure to saltwater, chloride-rich atmospheres, or aggressive chemicals, 316 stainless is generally the better choice. For automotive underhood use, garden equipment, or light outdoor fixtures, S301 typically performs well over time.

Yes. Thinner variants (0.05mm–0.2mm) can generally be cut cleanly with sharp metal shears, a utility knife against a steel straightedge, or a laser cutter. Thicker variants (0.3mm–0.8mm) typically require aviation snips, a metal nibbler, or a rotary tool with a thin cutting disc. Drilling is possible with HSS or cobalt drill bits at low RPM with cutting fluid to prevent work-hardening at the drill point.
