Measure three dimensions with calipers: the shaft inner diameter (ID), the housing bore outer diameter (OD), and the housing depth (thickness). All three must match. For example, an 8*22*7mm seal has an 8mm (≈5/16") ID, 22mm (≈7/8") OD, and 7mm (≈9/32") thickness. If you only have an inch measurement, multiply by 25.4 to convert to mm. When in doubt, measure the old seal directly.

NBR stands for Nitrile Butadiene Rubber, and 70 refers to the Shore A hardness rating. NBR 70 is the most common compound for oil seals — it generally resists petroleum-based oils, greases, diesel, and gasoline well. It typically handles temperatures from about -40°F to +250°F (-40°C to +120°C). For synthetic esters, ketones, or strong acids, a different elastomer such as Viton (FKM) is usually recommended.

A single-lip seal has one sealing lip that retains lubricant. A dual-lip TC seal adds a second, shorter dust lip on the air side that blocks contaminants — dirt, water, and debris — from reaching the primary lip and the bearing. NBR 70 generally performs well in splash-water and light moisture environments. The dual dust lip provides additional protection against water ingress. However, for prolonged submersion, ozone-heavy environments, or UV exposure, a Viton (FKM) seal is typically recommended. For most outdoor power equipment — garden tractors, chainsaws, pressure washers — NBR 70 TC seals are generally adequate.

Clean the housing bore and shaft thoroughly. Lightly lubricate the seal lips with the fluid being sealed (oil or grease). Press the seal in squarely using a seal driver or a flat block that contacts the outer metal case — never hammer directly on the rubber lip or the seal face. The metal case should sit flush with or slightly below the housing face. If the shaft has a keyway or sharp edge, use a chamfer or a thin installation sleeve to protect the lip during assembly.
