This double union PVC ball valve is built for exactly that scenario.

Each valve is constructed from rigid white PVC (uPVC) with solvent weld socket ends and a true double union body. The union nuts on both sides allow the valve to be unscrewed and lifted out of the line without disturbing adjacent pipework. Available in nine inner diameter sizes from 20mm (approx. ¾") to 110mm (approx. 4¼"), with wall dimensions conforming to standard metric pipe schedules.

Which size should I choose for my pond pump pipework?

Match the inner diameter of the valve to the outer diameter of your existing uPVC pipe. For example, if your pipe is 32mm OD metric uPVC, select the 32mm variant. If you are unsure, measure the outside of your pipe and cross-reference with standard metric pipe tables, or contact us to confirm before ordering.

Can I use this valve with CPVC or imperial-sized pipe?

These valves are sized for metric uPVC pipe conforming to BS EN ISO 1452 / DIN 8061 outside diameters. CPVC and imperial pipe have different OD dimensions and will not bond correctly with a solvent weld socket sized for metric pipe. Reducer bushes or adapters would be required — contact us to confirm compatibility for your specific pipe.

How strong is a solvent weld joint — will it hold under pressure?

When prepared and bonded correctly with a compatible PVC primer and solvent cement, a solvent weld joint chemically fuses the pipe and socket into a single piece. The joint typically exceeds the burst strength of the pipe wall itself. Allow the manufacturer's recommended cure time before pressurising — usually 24 hours at ambient temperature for full strength.

Is this valve resistant to pond treatments and chlorine?

Rigid uPVC has good resistance to chlorine at typical water treatment concentrations, common algaecides, and most pond additives used in koi and ornamental fish keeping. It is not recommended for concentrated acids, ketones, or aromatic solvents. For aggressive chemical dosing applications, contact us to confirm suitability.

What is the advantage of a double union over a standard ball valve?

A standard solvent weld ball valve is permanently bonded into the pipeline — if it fails or needs servicing, you must cut it out and re-cement new fittings. A double union valve has threaded union nuts on both sides, so you can unscrew the valve body and lift it out of the line in minutes, then reinstall or replace it without any pipe cutting or solvent cement work.

Can this valve be installed in any orientation?

PVC ball valves of this type are generally suitable for horizontal, vertical, and angled installation. Ensure the lever handle has sufficient clearance to rotate 90° fully in the chosen orientation. For vertical installations with the handle pointing downward, confirm the union nuts are fully tightened to prevent any weeping at the union seals.

Does the valve come with union seals / O-rings included?
