How to Use Wood Threaded Inserts for Invisible Furniture Assembly?

Screwing directly into wood works a few times, then the hole loosens. Threaded inserts give you a metal thread hidden inside the wood – they let you hide exposed screws on your furniture while allowing repeated screwing and unscrewing without damaging the wood. Installation takes just three steps: drill, align, drive. Perfect for furniture, jigs, workbenches, and any DIY project that needs knock‑down connections.

Materials List

  • Wood threaded insert
  • Wood board
  • Drill
  • Insert Nut Driver
  • Hanger bolt
  • Wooden cylindrical handle or table leg

Step by Step

Step 1: Drill the hole

Choose a drill bit that matches the outer diameter of the insert. Drill a straight, vertical hole in the board. The hole size must be very close to the insert's outer diameter. Use a drill guide for perfect perpendicularity.

Step 2: Drive the insert

Attach the driver bit to your drill and thread the insert onto it. Set the drill to low speed and high torque. Keep the drill vertical and drive the insert smoothly into the hole until it sits flush with the wood surface.

Step 3: Connect the handle

Take a wooden handle that has a hanger bolt pre‑installed (wood thread into the handle). Align the exposed machine thread of the hanger bolt with the insert's hole, then hand‑tighten it.

Threaded inserts + hanger bolts give you strong, clean, removable wood joints. Unscrew everything for moving or repairs – the wood stays intact. Key points: correct drill bit size, perfectly vertical driving. One box of inserts lasts for dozens of projects. Every DIYer should have these.
