A 2:1 shrink ratio means the tubing shrinks to half its original inner diameter when heat is applied. Polyolefin heat shrink tubing typically begins to shrink at around 70–90°C (158–194°F) and fully shrinks at approximately 120°C (248°F). A standard heat gun is the recommended tool for even, controlled shrinkage. A lighter can work in a pinch but may cause uneven shrinkage or surface scorching — use it carefully and keep it moving.

Color selection is often guided by standard wiring conventions or personal organization preferences. Black is the most common for general insulation. Red is typically used for positive DC leads. White, green, yellow, and blue help with color-coded wire identification in multi-conductor harnesses. Transparent tubing is useful when you want to visually inspect the solder joint or wire label through the sleeve after shrinking.

For small repairs or hobby electronics projects, 5m (≈16.4 ft) is generally sufficient.
