The spring OD should be slightly smaller than the bore or housing it sits in, and slightly larger than any guide rod it slides over. A typical clearance is 0.5–1 mm between the spring OD and the bore wall. Select your OD from the variant dropdown, then verify the fit against your housing dimensions before assembly.
Free length is the uncompressed length of the spring. Choose a free length that is longer than your required working length by at least the amount of travel (stroke) you need. For example, if you need 20 mm of compression travel and your working length is 30 mm, select a free length of at least 50 mm.
Spring rate (load per unit deflection) varies by OD and free length combination. Longer springs with larger ODs generally have lower spring rates; shorter, smaller-OD springs are stiffer. These springs are made from carbon spring steel, which offers good mechanical properties but limited corrosion resistance in wet or chemically aggressive environments. These are compression springs designed to resist compressive loads. They are not suitable for tension applications. For tension use, a different spring type with hooked ends is required. Do not stretch these springs beyond their free length, as this can permanently deform the coils.
