Reel mowers work best on dry grass that's not too tall. It can cut grass up to 7.5 inches tall, but for the cleanest cut and easiest pushing, we recommend mowing before grass exceeds 4-5 inches. Wet grass tends to clump and may not cut as cleanly, so wait for your lawn to dry.
The heat-treated alloy steel blades stay sharp for a long time. However, after a few seasons of heavy use, they may need light sharpening. You can use a reel mower sharpening kit or take it to a local small-engine shop. Regular cleaning after each use and occasional lubrication will keep it running smoothly.
The grass catcher is effective, but because reel mowers cut with a scissor action rather than high-speed suction, some clippings may fall back onto the lawn—especially in dry or fluffy grass conditions. For best results, mow when grass is dry and not too tall. You can also remove the catcher and let clippings mulch naturally into your lawn.
The mower weighs only 13.6 lbs, so pushing on flat or gently sloped lawns is easy. On steeper hills, you'll feel more resistance, but many users still manage. The 8" polymer wheels provide good traction. For very hilly yards, you may want to mow across the slope rather than up and down.
Reel mowers excel on fine-bladed grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, and St. Augustine. They also work well on Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass when kept at moderate heights. For very thick or coarse weeds, a rotary mower might be better.
