❓ Frequently Asked Questions – 6″ Sanding Discs

● Will these 6″ (150mm) discs fit my random orbital sander?
Yes – as long as your sander has a 6″ hook‑and‑loop backing pad. This is a standard size for many professional and hobbyist orbital sanders from Dewalt, Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, Ryobi, Porter Cable, and others. Always verify your sander‘s pad diameter before ordering.
● What grit should I use for auto body filler vs. final paint prep?
For shaping body filler (bondo), start with 40‑80 grit. For smoothing filler before primer, use 120‑180 grit. For scuffing primer before topcoat, use 240‑320 grit. For final wet‑sanding clear coat (if desired), use 1000‑2000 grit. Our 40-2000 range covers the entire auto body process.
● Can I use these discs on hardwood like oak or walnut?
Absolutely. Aluminum oxide is excellent for hardwoods. Use 40-80 grit for aggressive stock removal, 100-150 for leveling, 180-240 for smoothing, and 320-400 for final sanding before stain or clear coat. The 6″ size covers more surface area, making it faster than smaller discs.
● How do I know when to move to the next grit?
A good rule of thumb: when the scratches from the current grit are uniform and the surface feels consistently scratched (no shiny spots), move to the next finer grit. Never skip more than double the grit number (e.g., 80 → 150 → 240). Skipping grits leaves deep scratches that will show through paint or finish.
● Are these discs suitable for polishing metal to a mirror finish?
For mirror finishing on metal, we recommend progressing to 2000 grit and then using a polishing compound. This disc set goes up to 2000 grit, which is excellent for achieving a near‑mirror surface on soft metals like aluminum, brass, and copper. For stainless steel, follow with a dedicated polishing pad and compound after 2000 grit.
