Match the barb diameter to the inner diameter (ID) of your flexible tubing. If in doubt, measure your tubing ID with calipers before ordering.

BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads — labeled G1/8, G1/4, G3/8, G1/2 — are defined by the nominal pipe bore and are widely used in plumbing, pneumatics, and irrigation fittings. Metric threads — M4, M6, M8, etc. — are defined by the outer diameter of the thread in millimeters and are common in machinery and equipment ports. Check the thread standard of your receiving port before selecting a size.

For low-pressure applications such as drip irrigation or light air lines, the barb profile typically holds flexible tubing securely without a clamp. For higher-pressure systems or vibrating environments, adding a small hose clamp over the tubing at the barb is recommended to prevent pull-out. Always test the joint at working pressure before putting the system into service.

The barbed end, once inserted into tubing, may stretch the tubing slightly — whether the same tubing can be reused depends on how much it has deformed. For critical joints, using a fresh section of tubing when reinstalling is advisable to maintain a reliable seal.
