No. The self-drilling tip bores through sheet metal up to approximately 2 mm thick and into wood without pre-drilling. For thicker or harder steel, a small pilot hole can reduce drive torque, but in most roofing, framing, and HVAC applications these are true one-step fasteners.
410 stainless is harder and stronger than 304, offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance for indoor and mild outdoor use. It is also magnetic. For constant saltwater or harsh chemical exposure, 316 would be preferable, but for roofing, HVAC, and general construction, 410 performs very well at a lower cost than 316.
