Zinc electroplating provides a sacrificial barrier that protects the underlying steel from surface rust in typical indoor and sheltered outdoor conditions. It is not suitable for prolonged immersion in water, strongly acidic or alkaline environments, or marine exposure without additional sealing or coating. For harsher environments, consider painting, powder-coating, or applying a clear lacquer over the zinc finish.
Yes. Mild steel is highly workable: it can be MIG or TIG welded, drilled with standard HSS bits, ground, tapped, and painted. Note that welding will burn off the zinc coating in the heat-affected zone — grind back the plating before welding and re-treat the area afterwards if corrosion protection is needed. For painting, lightly abrade the surface first to improve adhesion.
