Yes. Rigid PVC is suitable for below-ground use in non-pressure drainage applications. For permanent underground installations, we recommend solvent-welding the cap to the pipe spigot and allowing full cure time before backfilling.

Both colors are made from the same rigid PVC material and offer identical performance. White is the standard choice for most indoor and outdoor drain systems. Red is commonly used in color-coded pipework schemes — for example, to distinguish fire-suppression lines or to mark capped branches for future identification during inspections.

The caps can be used either way. For temporary capping during construction or testing, a firm push-fit onto a clean, dry spigot is sufficient. For permanent, watertight terminations — especially in below-ground or pressurized test scenarios — apply a compatible PVC solvent cement to both the pipe spigot and the cap socket before joining.

These caps are designed for standard PVC / uPVC pipe systems. Push-fit use on ABS pipe of the same nominal diameter is generally possible if the outer diameter matches. Solvent welding to ABS requires an ABS-compatible cement. They are not recommended for HDPE pipe, which requires mechanical or electrofusion fittings.

For a single capped branch (e.g., an unused toilet outlet), one piece is sufficient. If you are capping multiple redundant outlets across a renovation — such as a bath waste, a basin waste, and a shower drain — ordering a 3- or 5-piece pack of the appropriate size offers better value per unit and ensures you have a spare on hand.

Rigid PVC performs reliably between 0°C and approximately 60°C (32°F–140°F). They are suitable for cold and warm waste water drainage but are not intended for continuous hot water discharge above 60°C. For high-temperature applications, consider polypropylene (PP) fittings instead.
