- Wood glue and toothpicks

Step by step
Step 1: Find the Short Leg
Place the stool on a flat surface and press on each corner. The leg that lifts off the floor is your problem. Mark it with a pencil so you know exactly where to work.
Step 2: Look for Built-In Leg Levelers
Flip the stool over. Many modern stools have threaded glides at the bottom of each leg. You can screw these in or out to change the leg length. This is the cleanest fix — no cutting, no pads, no mess.
Step 3: Adjust with an Allen Wrench
If your stool uses fasteners hidden under the seat, loosen them a turn or two. Set the stool upright, sit on it, and shift your weight until the legs sit flat. Then tighten everything back down. A quick test will confirm the wobble is gone.
Step 4: Add Felt Pads for Small Gaps
For gaps under 3mm, self-adhesive felt pads are your best friend. Stick one onto the short leg, test again, and add a second layer if needed. They also protect your floor from scratches.
Step 5: Trim Longer Legs for Big Gaps
For gaps larger than 3mm, shorten the long legs instead. Mark the amount to remove with a pencil, then sand or saw carefully. Go slow — you can always remove more, but you can't put material back.
Step 6: Final Test
Place the stool back on the floor. No rocking, no knocking, no noise. Tighten any remaining fasteners and wipe down the surface. Done.
You don't need a workshop or special skills to level a stool — just ten minutes and one Allen wrench. Fix that wobbly bar stool yourself and enjoy a quiet, stable seat again. Grab your tools and give it a shot.
